Thanks to Martin Jefferson & Sons for cutting the grass at the Carmel Valley Air Field at a special price. The airfield was the location for the car parking of the more than 600 hundred people attending the Carmel River Watershed Conservancy, 2004 Steinbeck Century.    This prevents a possible fire hazard.

Thank you all, our sponsors, supporters and most importantly our riders.

The Ride Routes

All rides start and finish in Carmel Valley Village. The shorter rides will stay mainly within the beautiful Carmel River watershed, while the Century climbs out of the valley and then climbs again through Steinbeck’s Pastures of Heaven. The route follows the historic path of Juan Bautista de Anza on his way to settle Monterey, through Monterey’s acclaimed wine corridor along the Salinas River. A rest stop at the historic Mission Soledad leads to the rolling hills and incredible early season wildflowers along the Arroyo Seco River. Another rest stop at the rivers edge will fuel you for a substantial climb through fields bursting with lupine and poppies to a spectacular view of the Ventana Wilderness and re-entry into the Carmel River Watershed. Then, a wonderful 20 miles downhill (well, mostly...) to the finish back in the Village. The Century has about 6350 feet of climbing. The Metric Century also has significant climbs totaling about 4270 ft., while the 40 mile ride climbs about 2510 ft., and the 20 mile ride climbs only 1180 ft.

Ride Support

The Steinbeck Watershed Century is a fully supported bicycle tour with technical, SAG, and communications support. It has fully stocked and staffed Rest Stops with food and beverages selected by riders for riders. Local businesses will provide fresh fruit, great carbos, water, energy drinks, and other good stuff to fuel the hungry cyclist. A post-ride BBQ and party will complete the day.

Ride Rules

All bicyclists must obey the rules of the road governing bicycling in the state of California.

Some portions of the route are narrow and winding, and cyclists must share the road with and not unduly impede the flow of motor vehicles, staying on the right and riding single file, stopping at stop signs and traffic signals as required by law.

Wearing approved helmets is required of all participants.

The route will be marked and participants will be provided with maps of the course.

Directions to Start

All rides start and end in Carmel Valley Village Park, located 12 miles upstream on Carmel Valley Rd. from it’s intersection with Highway 1. From Highway 68, between Monterey and Salinas, take Laureles Grade Rd. over the mountains to the Carmel Valley Rd. intersection, turn left, and go 2 miles into the Village and turn on Ford Rd. Signs in the Village will point the way to the start.
