In March  2005 after the successful completion of the Carmel River Watershed Assessment  and Action Plan the Watershed Council was dissolved. and the Carmel River Watershed Conservancy now continues as the surviving entity. Its primary purpose is the Conservation of the Carmel River, education of the public in matters relating to that conservation and continuing to act as a catalyst for co-operative  conservation efforts within the watershed and the Central Coast Region. Officers and board members are chosen for  their knowledge not only of the current problems  affecting the Carmel River Watershed but an interest in finding resolution to the deadlock that exists on the Monterey Peninsula.

The Carmel River Watershed Council, which was established in September, 1999, was composed of a 13 member Steering Committee representing 13 stakeholder interest groups in the Carmel River Watershed. The Council was governed by consensus.  The Steering Committee met monthly and planned quarterly Council meetings open to the public. These quarterly council meetings highlighted informative watershed presentations.

In June of 2000, the stakeholder representatives in the Steering Committee created  “The Carmel River Watershed Conservancy”, which received  501 (c)3 non-profit corporation  status from the IRS.  Council Steering Committee representatives served as the Conservancy Board of Directors.  The Conservancy, as the non-profit corporation, had as its mission statement to create a vehicle for public education, and to ensure on-going financial support for implementation of projects and activities initiated by the Council.

In brief, the role of the Council Steering Committee was  to represent the diverse watershed community interests, propose programs, projects and activities for the Council. The role of the Conservancy was to raise funding to support the programs, projects and activities of the Council. In 2004 the Watershed Council was absorbed by the Carmel River Watershed Conservancy and we have since operated as Steward for the Carmel River Watershed.
