Text Box: A watershed is all of the land, from ridgetop to ridgetop, that drains its water into the ocean by way of gullies, creek, and rivers.  The Carmel Watershed includes all the land that drains into the Carmel Bay via the Carmel River and its tributaries.

Text Box: Steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is an anadromous version of a  rainbow trout.  Anadromous means that they are born in fresh water streams, then migrate to the ocean as juveniles and adults and then return to  freshwater streams to spawn.  This life cycle is like a salmon's, except that steelhead do not die after spawning.  They can swim back to ocean and may return years later to spawn again in the original stream.
When steelhead are ready to go to the ocean as 'smolts' their bodies lose their red 'rainbow trout' colors and become silvery with black tipped fins and tail. They go to an area of brackish water to acclimatize their systems to salt water.  In Carmel they use the lagoon to do this.
